How To Find Time To Exercise
How To Find Time To Exercise
I know, I know, you're too busy to exercise. I hear this daily from everyone I talk to. Work, kids, daily chores, and just life all together can be very overwhelming, leaving you with little time for anything extra. You want to get fit, but finding the time seems impossible. However, I'm here to show you; you do have time to exercise.
Exercising and dieting aren't always for vanity reasons. You're not selfish for wanting to look and feel better and cleaning up your nutrition and moving that body are the only ways to get there. As much as you have on your plate (no pun intended), you need to make your health a top priority.
Your loved ones depend on you to be healthy and be able to keep up with them. If you're not taking care of yourself, you will soon find your daily responsibilities even harder. If you're feeling run down, exercising is precisely what you need. Yes, exercise helps boost your energy and keep you moving forward.
Getting fit doesn't have to be grueling and restrictive. Finding a balance is key to reaching your goals and staying with it, no matter what life throws at you. You don't have to commit to hours a day of exercising. You don't have to put your tennis shoes on every night and go for an hour-long jog, till you feel like you're going to die. That's not getting fit. That's torture, and the more you learn how to exercise, instead of following an intense workout plan, the more you'll see that yes, you do have time to take care of your body. You'll learn to make it a lifestyle and not let it feel like a dreadful punishment that you push to the end of your daily priorities.
Everyone deserves to feel better, and changing their bodies is one of the many elements of feeling better. When your body begins to shed weight, you get used to a new routine, and your energy levels start to increase, exercise will become a critical part of your everyday life. It's not allowing yourself enough time to reap the benefits of exercising that people miss out on. You exercise for a few weeks, you feel overwhelmed with your schedule, and you're frustrated that you do not see results, so you quit too soon.
Learning to balance your life with exercise and having the patience to stick with it for a month will allow you to see and feel the benefits of squeezing healthy living into your typical day. Don't overthink it. Start slow and be consistent, and you will find yourself making more time to keep that body moving.
WEEKENDS
People think that workouts begin on Mondays and end on Fridays. Not true at all! If you're a super busy person, you need to retrain your brain to set up your workouts around your hectic schedule. You have to find what works best for you and your daily tasks. There is no rule book for when what time, or where you should exercise. It's all dependent on you and what works for you, not against you.
Most people think of Mondays as their start of the week. I think of my new week with a Sunday. I begin my workouts on a Sunday and make my rest days on Friday and Saturdays. Why? Because it works for me. I've found that by the end of the week, I'm tired, my kids have a million things going on and my house is usually a total disaster from the hectic week we've all had.
We run in and out of the house, and things are laying everywhere. If you're anything like me, messes drive me crazy and unsettled. I need cleanliness and order to be able to relax. I can relax once I have all my workouts completed, and my house tidied up. I feel a sense of accomplishment and ease.
If I see a super busy week coming up, I'll begin my workouts on a Saturday, allowing myself to pick a rest day, maybe on Tuesday or Thursday. Maybe my daughter has a soccer game on Tuesday evening, or my other daughter and I are traveling to another area for her ski races. I look ahead and build my exercise regimen around my schedule. Therefore, I'm consistently working out and not walking around, feeling guilty that I missed another workout.
There is no right or wrong time to workout. If you're serious about getting fit, you must get serious about scheduling your time. Pick two days that you're slammed at work or with kids stuff, and make those your rest days. Then work in your exercises on the other five days of the week. Typically on weekends, we can find a little extra time. You may have to get up a little bit earlier in the morning or head to bed later, but allow those two weekend days to be great workout days that you can get over with and feel good about accomplishing your goals.
KIDS PRACTICE
If you have children in school, then you're well aware of all the extracurricular activities they become involved in. These alone can create a full-time job for parents. I feel like an Uber driver in the evenings. If you live out in the country, your week is tied up in endless driving hours, to and from practices. Believe me; I know all about it.
When you want to get fit, you think about your crazy evenings and all that you have in front of you, and you begin letting that dream of changing your body fade to the background of your kid's needs. You feel like you'll never be able to make yourself a priority again until they move out. Not true, at all. You are a priority; you just have to learn how to make time again. We sometimes forget what life was like before we had kids.
Your health and well-being do matter, so utilize your time where you can. While your child is at practice, get your exercises in. No, you don't need to leave them and head to a gym. You could go for a walk. Hit a bodyweight workout, like squats, pushups, mountain climbers, and jumping lunges. Take a pair of dumbbells and a yoga mat with you and get your exercises in while your child is practicing. There are endless ways to fit workouts in.
Don't worry about other people being around. You just do what's best for you. You might even be surprised by how many other parents there will ask to join you. You will inspire others to get out of their seats and move their bodies. Most will feel guilty that they're sitting there and probably are using their child's sport as an excuse, not to workout. Be brave and get moving. Start small with a fifteen-minute exercise session. Each week, you'll build more confidence to lengthen your workouts.
TO GO MEALS
If you're struggling to find time to exercise, start eating on the go. Instead of heading to a restaurant with co-workers, head out to exercise, and replace your lunch with something quick and easy. So much time is spent on sitting down for a meal. Now, I do think a meal with the family, is always time well spent. Matter of fact, it's a rule with my family that dinners are to be enjoyed together, at a table, either at home or at a restaurant. Either way, we are sitting, talking, and enjoying our meal and catching up on the day.
I use the daytime to eat quick, on the go meals. Breakfast time and lunchtime are hectic, and typically, my kids are at school. I microwave my breakfast and quickly eat it before heading out for the day, and I'm always sure to have a protein shake ready for my lunch. I put a scoop of protein powder in my shaker cup and pack a bottle of water, and my lunch is available for whenever I'm ready.
I save thirty minutes a day by choosing a shake over a sit-down meal. I can do my workout, mix up my shake, and drink it as I drive to my next task. You have to make your daily exercises a priority, and picking and choosing will become part of your new norm. Yes, it's fun to go out and eat with others, and once you become acquainted with a healthy lifestyle, you'll make time for those outings. In the beginning, you need to stick with your guns until you no longer have to think about working out. You just do it.
Prep and plan the night before so you don't fall prey to all the distractions and temptations that will be thrown at you daily. If you don't have your shake with you, you'll easily skip your workout and join others for lunch. It will feel great at the moment, but I can promise you, you'll wish you hadn't an hour later. Prepped food is a sure way to keep you motivated and track when it comes to weight loss and reaching your goals.
ALARM CLOCK
Here's another area where you can find time to exercise. Get up earlier in the morning. I know this can be tough, but I can show you ways to get around the dreadful feeling of getting up earlier than you already do. You don't need to be extreme and revamp your entire sleeping pattern. Baby steps are all it will take to get you some extra exercise time.
Making this task a little easier begins in the evening. Cut off your caffeine early in the evening so that your body is ready to fall asleep. You need to be relaxed and prepared to doze off at night. Being up late and tossing and turning will only make your early mornings even harder. When you do get into bed, turn off your phone. You don't want to be stressing over emails and texts while trying to fall asleep.
Have your clothes laid out the night before. There's nothing worse than waking up early to workout, and you spend half of your time looking for your gym shorts or your headphones. Have EVERYTHING, including your socks laid out and ready to grab. Leave no room for excuses to skip your workout.
If you absolutely hate to workout early, go for a walk or walk on the treadmill. By doing this, you're allowing your body to learn a new way of getting up and getting moving. Walking will loosen you up and have you feeling more energized and ready to tackle the day. You can slowly build from there.
Start with fifteen minutes of walking, jogging, or weight training in the mornings. Again, you can build from there. However, don't wake up at four in the morning to exercise, if you typically get up at six. If you take too big of a jump in changing your normal lifestyle, you'll end up quitting before ever getting in the rhythm. Sticking with small changes, consistently, will catapult you to more significant changes and tremendous results. Baby steps.
PROGRAMS
If you know deep down, that you could find time to exercise, but you find yourself every day making excuses of why you can't exercise, you probably are a good candidate for a fitness program or hiring a trainer. Why? Accountability! Accountability has a considerable impact when it comes to you, making changes happen, just like deadlines.
Sometimes, we convince ourselves that we just can't find the time to better ourselves, when it really only comes down to having the urgency to really dig deep and do it. We continuously tell ourselves we'll start next week or next month. Time passes, and nothing terrible happens, so we push it out yet another month or week.
Having a plan or a person to give you a roadmap and deadlines to accomplish things will help you make time in your daily life to exercise. You have homework and goals to reach. You feel good knowing what you have to do and how to do it. Having small goals in front of you keeps you on track and motivated to keep moving forward. Having an appointment with a trainer holds you responsible for showing up. Hiring an online trainer, like myself, has someone in your corner, waiting to hear from you every week, and cheering you on every step of the way.
You magically make time when you know someone is counting on you to make it happen. It's like when a doctor tells you that your blood work is off and you have thirty days to get your numbers better. You watch everything you eat, you walk more, and you try to live a healthier life. You know that blood work is coming back again and you want to see improvement. It gives you something urgent to work towards.
Finding time to exercise can feel impossible, but the rewards you receive from making time to exercise will far outweigh your struggle to fit it in. It will take work and juggling, but once you find your sweet spot, you'll quickly find the time and more of it. You'll feel better and be more motivated to keep moving up. You'll become addicted to your daily exercises and see that you were most likely, just avoiding it in the first place.
BONUS TIP: (you'll find time to exercise after reading this one!)
Here's a simple tip I always give to a new client that comes to me. I want you to think of a person in a hospital when you think you don't have time to workout. Maybe they're there for chemotherapy or on kidney dialysis. Whatever the reason, I want you to envision this person, laying in the hospital.
Now, while you're thinking about them, know that they're laying there thinking about everything they wish they could be doing, instead of laying there. See, they don't have the choice to go exercise. They have no choice but to endure this treatment or illness that they've been handed. That patient wishes they had the option to go workout and have the opportunity to have a healthy body.
For years, anytime I feel lazy and want to avoid exercising, all I have to do is think of the loved ones in my life that have had to endure cancer or near-death experiences. Sometimes we forget how blessed we are to have bodies that are willing to work for us to live long, healthy lives. Never take your health for granted and use that as fuel to get yourself moving and living a healthier life. Your body needs to be exercised. Find time to make it happen, and I promise you, your body will reward you.
